SCORING SUMMARY

FIRST QUARTER
ATLANTA: Jumpy Geathers overran Aaron Taylor, forcing Brett Favre to scramble into a sack by Chris Doleman. Then Chris Jacke missed a 46-yard field-goal attempt to the left, negating a 30-yard interception return by George Teague to the Atlanta 22. "I wasn't discouraged; I was mad," Packers coach Mike Holmgren said. "That was not a good way to start. I won't tolerate that type of play." After Craig Heyward lost a yard on first down, Jeff George completed a 65-yard touchdown pass to Eric Metcalf. Matt LaBounty forced George to scramble right, but Craig Newsome didn't respect George's powerful arm and failed to stick with Metcalf deep enough. Metcalf made the catch at the Green Bay 22 and ran in for the score. "When it's a scramble, you've got to get the guy in your zone," defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmur said. "We didn't do that." Morten Andersen converted with 12 minutes 1 seconds left. Two plays, 64 yards, 51 seconds time of possession.
Atlanta 7, Green Bay 0.

GREEN BAY: Antonio Freeman returned the kickoff 42 yards. Favre hit Mark Chmura for 13, then Brooks for 7. On third and 5, Brooks broke into the middle ahead of Jessie Tuggle for a 7-yard reception to the Atlanta 8. After Chuck Smith batted down a pass, Edgar Bennett followed a booming block by William Henderson -- "a flatback," Henderson said -- and cut back through right guard for an 8-yard touchdown. Jacke converted with 8:17 left. Eight plays, 48 yards, 3:44.
Green Bay 7, Atlanta 7.

GREEN BAY: George fumbled a center exchange, forcing a punt. Cornerback Ronald Davis was penalized 35 yards for pass interference on a deep post to Brooks. Bennett rushed three times for 20 yards against the Falcons' nickel defense. Then Brooks beat Darnell Walker badly on a slant-and-go into the right corner for a 14-yard touchdown pass from Favre. Jacke converted with 3:25 left. Five plays, 78 yards, 2:47.
Green Bay 14, Atlanta 7.

SECOND QUARTER
ATLANTA: On third and 3, George scrambled right and hit Terance Mathis for 55 yards. Mathis crossed the field from the left slot and outran Wayne Simmons, who didn't receive any help from the secondary. "Just scramble plays; you can't win football games with those," Metcalf said. From the Green Bay 20, Heyward gained 1, a pass to J.J. Birden gained 6 and Lenny McGill made a last-ditch breakup of what appeared to be a touchdown pass in the corner to Birden. "I read his hands and his eyes," McGill said. Andersen kicked a 31-yard field goal with 14:53 left. Seven plays, 60 yards, 3:32.
Green Bay 14, Atlanta 10.

GREEN BAY: LeRoy Butler dropped an interception, but a holding penalty on Bob Whitfield against Sean Jones forced the Falcons to punt. "Of course he held me," Jones said. Freeman fielded Dan Stryzinski's 42-yard punt in the middle of the field, then cut sharply to his left and outraced the punter down the sideline for a 76-yard touchdown. The key block was thrown by Matthew Dorsett and Terry Mickens on outside wing defender Alton Montgomery. "You stay on your block and listen to the crowd," Mickens said. "If the crowd gets loud you know he's getting close." Frank Winters' snap on the extra point was high, and Jacke couldn't get the conversion off with 8:37 left.
Green Bay 20, Atlanta 10.

GREEN BAY: Butler dropped another interception on second down, but the Falcons still had to punt. Starting from his 15, Favre completed first-down passes of 9 yards to Keith Jackson and 14 yards to Freeman wrapped around three first-down runs by Bennett. From the Atlanta 6, Chmura dropped a touchdown pass in the end zone. "I hit him in a bad spot, right between the numbers," Favre joked. Then a swing pass to Dorsey Levens gained 1 before D.J. Johnson was penalized for 3 yards for pass interference against Freeman. "He grabbed me," Freeman said. "I wanted that touchdown." On the next play, Favre rolled right and found Chmura for a 2-yard touchdown pass ahead of linebacker Ken Tippins. "It was first down and they were expecting us to run," Chmura said. "I beat the guy to the corner." Jacke converted with 49 seconds left. 14 plays, 85 yards, 5:22.
Green Bay 27, Atlanta 10.

THIRD QUARTER
No scoring.

FOURTH QUARTER
ATLANTA: Operating from the shotgun formation for the first time, George completed six short passes in a row, then found Mathis for 13 against Butler on a fourth and 6. On the next play, George caught the Packers in an all-out blitz and hit Birden on a short slant at the 22 against McGill, who missed the tackle and enabled Birden to sprint in for a 27-yard touchdown. "I took a bad angle and he just slipped through the tackle," McGill said. Andersen converted with 14:07 left. 11 plays, 80 yards, 5:34.
Green Bay 27, Atlanta 17.

GREEN BAY: The Packers overcame major penalties against Anthony Morgan and Earl Dotson by converting three third downs. The key play was a 10-yard pass to Morgan on third and 8 at the Atlanta 47 when officials ruled that Johnson forced Morgan out of bounds. Morgan said it was a good call. "It has to be a more flagrant forceout for that to be called," Falcons coach June Jones said. Brooks made a 20-yard catch on third and 8 when safety Devin Bush missed the tackle. From the Atlanta 25, Bennett rushed twice for 7 yards before Levens came out of the backfield and made a leaping catch between Walker and Kevin Ross at the goal line for an 18-yard touchdown. "It's just like a flat-and-up that San Francisco runs," Walker said. "I think the pump held me for a second. Just a good play." Jacke converted with 7:45 left. 12 plays, 70 yards, 6:22.
Green Bay 34, Atlanta 17.

ATLANTA: George completed five of six passes for 60 yards from a conventional formation. From the Green Bay 8, tackle Dave Richards was penalized for a false start, George threw incomplete, a middle screen to Heyward gained 9 and then Simmons batted down a pass to Metcalf.
Andersen kicked a 22-yard field goal with 4:06 left. 10 plays, 64 yards, 3:39.
Green Bay 34, Atlanta 20.

GREEN BAY: Marcus Wilson recovered an onside kick at the Atlanta 33. Pierce Holt handed Green Bay a first down with an unnecessary roughness penalty. After three plunges by Bennett, Jacke kicked a 25-yard field goal with 1:56 left. Six plays, 26 yards, 2:10.
Green Bay 37, Atlanta 20.
