SCORING SUMMARY

FIRST QUARTER

Kordell Stewart directed two long drives on Pittsburgh's first two possessions. The defense stopped him after two first downs to open the game and then on Craig Newsome's interception and 26-yard return on the second series. Three plays later from the Pittsburgh 36, the Packers employed a double tight-end formation with Keith Jackson and Mark Chmura lined up tight on the right side. Brett Favre looked to Robert Brooks short right as the linebacker moved outside to cover him. That left Jackson running down the numbers with cornerback Rod Woodson several steps behind. Favre bought time to his right and then found Jackson, who made an over-the-shoulder catch at the 5. Woodson jarred the ball loose at the 1, but Jackson recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. Chris Jacke converted with 3 minutes 24 seconds left. Three plays, 45 yards, 1:23 time of possession. Green Bay 7, Pittsburgh 0.

SECOND QUARTER

The Steelers took over at the Green Bay 41 when safety Carnell Lake intercepted a pass near the line by Doug Pederson, which had been batted into the air by bull-rushing defensive lineman Bill Johnson. On the second play, defensive end Sean Jones was penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct after Ron Cox tackled Jerome Bettis for a loss of 3. From the 20, Bettis gained 4 and 2 yards before Jones and cornerback Matthew Dorsett combined to turn a toss-sweep by Erric Pegram into minus-3. Norm Johnson kicked a 35-yard field goal with 2:40 left. Six plays, 24 yards, 2:53. Green Bay 7, Pittsburgh 3.

William Henderson fumbled when hit by linebacker Chad Brown and Lake recovered at the Green Bay 37. After Reggie White sacked Stewart, Shannon Clavelle batted Stewart's pass into the air and Doug Evans intercepted. After Antonio Freeman dropped a pass 16 yards downfield, he made amends on the next play by hauling in a 64-yard touchdown pass from Pederson behind cornerback Chris Oldham. Safety Myron Bell was unable to get over and break up the perfectly thrown pass that came down at the Pittsburgh 20. Jacke converted with 59 seconds left. Two plays, 64 yards, 16 seconds. Green Bay 14, Pittsburgh 3.

After the Steelers picked up two first downs, LeRoy Butler probably should have intercepted a long pass by Stewart. Pittsburgh then sent four wideouts right and ran them all deep. Corey Holliday eluded a bump from Evans at the line and continued on to the goal line, where Stewart's arching bomb came down in his grasp for a touchdown as time expired. Neither Butler nor Newsome were aggressive in their attempts to break up the pass. Stewart swept left end for a two-point conversion. Seven plays, 80 yards, 59 seconds. Green Bay 14, Pittsburgh 11.

THIRD QUARTER

Mike Tomczak replaced Stewart to start the second half. He hit Charles Johnson and Jahine Arnold for first downs. A sack by Keith McKenzie and Darius Holland on third down apparently stopped the drive, but Matthew Dorsett was penalized for holding. Another third-down pass was incomplete but the Steelers got another chance when cornerback Keith Crawford was penalized for holding. Arnold caught a short hitch against Dorsett, who missed the tackle (injuring his knee in the process) and turned it into a 33-yard gain. From the 2, Bettis was stopped on consecutive carries before Tomczak fell on his own fumbled snap from center. Joe Wood, who had a brief trial with the Packers early in the Mike Holmgren era, kicked a 20-yard field goal with 6:58 left. 15 plays, 76 yards, 6:58. Green Bay 14, Pittsburgh 14.

Desmond Howard fielded Shayne Edge's 41-yard punt. He eluded the first man down, linebacker Earl Holmes, skipped right and made linebacker Eric Ravotti miss. Picking up steam, Howard ran through a feeble attempt at a tackle by Edge and then outran safety Ricky Bell into the end zone for a 77-yard touchdown. Richie Cunningham converted with 42 seconds left. Green Bay 21, Pittsburgh 14.

FOURTH QUARTER

Pederson and center Frank Winters failed to execute a center snap and Ravotti recovered at the Green Bay 38. The Steelers moved inside the 10, but on third and goal McKenzie sacked quarterback Jim Miller. Wood kicked a 29-yard field goal with 7:29 left. 10 plays, 21 yards, 5:16. Green Bay 21, Pittsburgh 17.

The defense kept the Steelers at bay late in the quarter. Starting from their 41, running back James Bostic carried several times for good gains before Jacke kicked a 40-yard field goal with 1:53 left. Five plays, 19 yards, 1:53. Green Bay 24, Pittsburgh 17.
