SCORING SUMMARY |
FIRST QUARTER
Brett Favre opened with a 19-yard pass to Keith Jackson off play action. On third and five Antonio Freeman broke from the slot and made a leaping catch for 25 yards. Defensive end Rob Burnett knocked Favre down on the next play but his quick underneath pass to Robert Brooks gained 16 to the Baltimore 28. With William Henderson neutralizing linebacker Ray Lewis in the hole Edgar Bennett exploded for 15 up the middle. After Isaac Booth broke up a pass for Freeman in the end zone and Bennett gained 2, Henderson swept left end for 8 against a nickel defense. On first and goal from a double tight end set Favre found Brooks in the rear of the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown pass. The ball was tipped by linebacker Ed Sutter. Chris Jacke converted with 4 minutes 54 seconds left. 10 plays, 93 yards, 4:45 time of possession. Green Bay 7, Baltimore 0. SECOND QUARTER The Ravens pounded out four first downs, then turned it over when Gilbert Brown stripped Vinny Testaverde after pressure from Reggie White and Sean Jones recovered at the Green Bay 22. On the first play Favre's shovel pass under duress was almost intercepted by Anthony Pleasant. Bennett lost 3, setting up third and 13. Favre took a short drop, didn't find a receiver and felt the pressure of Jerrol Williams blitzing past Bennett. Favre fled backward and to the left with Pleasant in hot pursuit. He attempted a back-handed flip in the general direction of Bennett, but referee Johnny Grier threw a flag for intentional grounding. Because Favre was in the end zone, it was a safety with 7:16 left. Favre and coach Mike Holmgren appealed to Grier without success. Green Bay 7, Baltimore 2. THIRD QUARTER Henderson fumbled to open the quarter and the Ravens recovered, but Baltimore punted and the Packers' No. 1 offense went the length of the field against the Ravens' No. 2 defense. Key plays were Favre's passes of 10 yards and 10 to Brooks, 16 to Freeman and 35 to halfback James Bostic on a play when Favre should have been sacked by Williams. Favre scrambled to his right and found Bostic all along on the left side. Bostic carried to the 17. Brian Satterfield plowed up the middle for a 5-yard touchdown with 6:53 left. Richie Cunningham converted. 11 plays, 93 yards, 6:14. Green Bay 14, Baltimore 2. Backup quarterback Eric Zeier hit Jermaine Lewis for 28 yards against what appeared to be a blown coverage. After a holding penalty, Zeier completed a third-and-11 pass to Ray Ethridge for 24 yards. The middle of the Packers secondary was wide open. After Zeier hit Lewis for a first down at the 3, his third-down pass was complete to James Roe for a touchdown. Zeier looked left, then bounced right and found Roe in the corner behind cornerbacks Tyrone Williams and Bucky Brooks. Matt Stover converted with 1:28 left. 10 plays, 67 yards, 5:24. Green Bay 14, Baltimore 9. FOURTH QUARTER Brian Satterfield fumbled when stripped by defensive back Donny Brady. formerly of the University of Wisconsin, and linebacker Mike Croel recovered at the Green Bay 47. Running back Derrick Cullors gained 25 yards off right tackle. From the 10, three plays failed to succeed before Zeier found Ethridge for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 1:06 left. Carlos Yancy let Ethridge inside on the play. A run by Cullors for two points failed. Eight plays, 37 yards, 2:11. Baltimore 15, Green Bay 14. The Packers struck back quickly behind Doug Pederson. He hit free agent Eric Matthews for 35 yards on a short crossing route that the rookie broke down the middle. Then Satterfield caught a short pass for 15 yards. Then Cunningham kicked a 41-yard field goal with 3 seconds left. Eight plays, 45 yards, 1:03. Green Bay 17, Baltimore 15. -- Bob McGinn FIRST QUARTER
