SCORING SUMMARY

FIRST QUARTER

Elvis Grbac missed Jerry Rice and Iheanyi Uwaezuoke in the clear on successive plays and the 49ers had to punt. After Edgar Bennett gained 2 over right end, Brett Favre found Keith Jackson for a long pass worth 50 yards. The play came on the Packers' first double tight end formation of the night. Jackson came off the left side and ran past man-to-man coverage by inside linebacker Ken Norton. He caught the ball near the 49ers' 25 and ran to the 10. From there, defensive end Roy Barker sacked Favre for minus-8, Dorsey Levens gained 3 and a short pass to Jackson gained 3. Chris Jacke kicked a 30-yard field goal with 5 minutes 23 seconds left.
Six plays, 50 yards, 3:19 time of possession. Green Bay 3, San Francisco 0.

Two plays later, Grbac threw a home-run ball to J.J. Stokes that was intercepted by Eugene Robinson. Stokes had Tyrone Williams beaten but stumbled just before the ball arrived. Robinson made the interception, showing terrific range from a center-field position. After Bennett gained 2, Favre skipped outside of Barker on a bootleg to the right. On the right sideline, cornerback Tyronne Drakeford passed Don Beebe off to safety Merton Hanks. When Favre broke containment, Hanks hesitated for a moment, enabling Beebe to escape down the sideline. Favre's pass on the run was true and Beebe stepped out of bounds at the 49ers' 12 after a gain of 54 yards. From there, Favre was hit as he threw an incomplete pass to Mark Chmura, Favre's slant to Antonio Freeman was broken up by Tim McDonald at the goal line, Chris Doleman was penalized 5 yards for being offside and Favre's third-down pass to William Henderson under duress was low. Jacke kicked a 25-yard field goal with 2:58 left.
Six plays, 61 yards, 1:24. Green Bay 6, San Francisco 0.

SECOND QUARTER

Favre spun around wildly on a fourth-and-5 scramble from the 49ers' 34, then threw incomplete and was knocked down hard. Grbac hit tight end Ted Popson for 17 off a play-action fake. On the next play, blitzing LeRoy Butler forced Grbac to flee right. Just before Grbac was knocked down, he found Jerry Rice. Robinson had the chance to break up the pass but Rice took it away from him and broke free for a gain of 24. From the Green Bay 25, Rice dropped a pass at the 14, Butler forced Grbac to throw it away and a deep pass to Rice against Craig Newsome was overthrown. Jeff Wilkins kicked a 48-yard field goal with 7:15 left.
Six plays, 36 yards, 1:51. Green Bay 6, San Francisco 3.

Tommy Vardell gained 15 on a trap off the left side. On third and 2, Rice easily beat Williams on an out pattern for 13. After a pass to Terry Kirby gained 4, Sean Jones kicked Popson in the side when the tight end was down and drew a 9-yard unnecessary roughness penalty. After a pass to Vardell failed to gain and Vardell cracked for 2, Rice caught a 7-yard touchdown pass. Grbac had about 6 seconds to scan the secondary for a receiver. Rice adjusted his route against Newsome and Butler just as Robinson took a step or two forward from the back of the end zone. Rice made the catch at the rear of the end zone in the area vacated by Robinson. Wilkins converted with 2:20 left.
Eight plays, 58 yards, 3:44. San Francisco 10, Green Bay 6.

After Favre passed for two first downs in a hurry-up offense, he tried to find Bennett on a short pass over the middle as he was pressured. Defensive tackle Dana Stubblefield dropped off into coverage, batted the ball into the air and returned the interception 15 yards to the Green Bay 28. Grbac picked up the first down on a third-and-1 sneak. From the 18, Vardell caught a hook pass for 5. Then Rice, split right against Newsome's press coverage, beat him with an outside release and Grbac's arching pass was on target at the goal line for a 13-yard touchdown. Wilkins converted with 23 seconds left.
Five plays, 28 yards, 1:09. San Francisco 17, Green Bay 6.

THIRD QUARTER

After an exchange of punts opened the second half, Favre hit Freeman for 14 on a sideline route against Marquez Pope. After Bennett gained 6 and Freeman dropped a pass, Beebe caught a 59-yard touchdown pass with 7:14 left. Favre eluded pressure and scrambled left as Beebe adjusted his post route against Pope and went to the sideline. Beebe made a diving catch at the 49ers 30. Pope appeared to touch Beebe's knee after he was down but officials ruled there was no contact and the touchdown stood. Favre rolled right on the 2-point conversion attempt and found Bennett at the 2 in traffic. The halfback plowed past linebacker Gary Plummer and scored with a two-arm lunge across the plane of the goal line.
Four plays, 79 yards, 1:22. San Francisco 17, Green Bay 14.

FOURTH QUARTER

The Packers started from their 32 after the 49ers punted for the fourth consecutive time in the second half. Twice Favre ran for first downs and Dorsey Levens gained 2 on third and 1. Freeman dropped another pass, setting up third and 10. Against a safety blitz, Levens picked up the leaping McDonald and Favre found Freeman for 16 on the sideline against Merton Hanks. From the 49ers 20, Drakeford broke up a pass to Freeman at the 5, Levens gained 2 and Favre was almost intercepted by Pope in the end zone on a pass to Desmond Howard. Jacke kicked a 35-yard field goal with 3:35 left.
15 plays, 50 yards, 5:53. Green Bay 17, San Francisco 17.

With 2:25 left, the Packers started from their 20. After an incomplete pass to Freeman, Favre's slant pass for rookie Derrick Mayes was intercepted by Pope, who returned it 12 yards to the Green Bay 12. Derek Loville rushed for no gain and 2 yards before Grbac fell down for no gain. Wilkins kicked a 28-yard field goal with 1:50 left.
Four plays, two yards, 23 seconds. San Francisco 20, Green Bay 17.

Nickel back Steve Israel was penalized 5 yards for illegal hands to the face. The 49ers argued and an unidentified player was hit with a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Favre hit Beebe for gains of 11 and 9. Then Favre scrambled for 12 yards to the 13 with 30 seconds left and the Packers used their final timeout. From there, Favre was pressured into three consecutive incomplete passes. Jacke kicked a 31-yard field goal with 8 seconds left.
10 plays, 69 yards, 1:42. Green Bay 20, San Francisco 20.

OVERTIME
