Bud & George Babcock |
George Vernon Babcock enlisted in the US Marine Corp Reserve on Dec 11, 1942,
he was 18 years old.
According to a story told by Birdge Junior "Bud" Babcock, George was wounded twice in the Pacific Theater of Operations,
the second of which caused his death. George was first wounded on Nov 20, 1943. He was shipped to a military
hospital in New Zealand. It was there that a fellow sailor told Bud that a wounded Marine named Babcock, who bore a striking
resemblence to Bud, was resting in a bed in the recovery ward. Upon inspection, Bud, who was a medic, found that the Marine was
infact his brother George.
After recovering from his wounds, George was sent back into action. During the June 15, 1944 invasion of Saipan he was KIA. The documents sent to the family report conflicting versions of his death. One letter says he drowned when his amphibious vehicle overturned. Another much more heroic version says he was mortally wounded by a mortar shell while trying to land on the Island of Saipan. Whatever the truth, during his short military career, he was awarded 2 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star, and ultimately gave his life for his country. |
